Zaha Hadid Architects Unveils Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Centre in China
The newly opened Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is set to become a cultural landmark in Dongguan, China, featuring innovative design inspired by traditional opera costumes and sustainable operational systems.

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has completed and opened the Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Centre (SSLEPC) in Dongguan, China. Located in the Greater Bay Area, the new facility is designed to be a significant civic and cultural hub for the growing community, revitalizing the Yuehe Lake waterfront.
Inaugural Events and Design Inspiration
The centre’s public program commenced with an opening concert, ‘The Sound of Songhu,’ led by the China National Symphony Orchestra. The architectural design draws inspiration from the rich heritage of Cantonese Opera, an art form with over 700 years of history dating back to the Song Dynasty. Specifically, the flowing forms of traditional opera costumes, particularly the silk ‘water sleeves’ worn by performers, have informed the building’s aesthetic. The design features multiple structures that crescendo and flare, with the western edge rising to frame the main theatre and exhibition spaces, evoking the dynamic gestures of opera performers.
Architectural Features and Regional Context
The design also incorporates elements of traditional Lingnan architecture, such as upturned eaves. These extended roof overhangs are engineered to maximize natural light within the interiors while providing essential protection from the humid subtropical climate of Dongguan. The SSLEPC facilitates seamless transitions between its interior and exterior spaces, opening onto a sheltered public plaza, garden terraces, and a waterfront promenade along Songshan Lake, intended for year-round public enjoyment.
Performance and Exhibition Spaces
The Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Centre houses a 1,200-seat Grand Theatre and an Exhibition Hall, both equipped to host large-scale productions, conferences, industry forums, art exhibitions, and sporting events. Additionally, a 400-seat Multifunction Hall is designated for smaller theatrical productions and children’s theatre. The Grand Theatre’s interior is notable for its 100,000 slender spines on the walls and ceiling, designed to enhance acoustic clarity by improving sound diffusion, controlling reverberation, and dispersing standing soundwaves. This field of spines, varying in length and density, creates a subtle, rhythmic visual texture within the space.
Sustainability and Construction Innovation
ZHA has integrated several sustainable and innovative construction strategies into the project. The use of prefabricated ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) cladding, cast from reusable molds, has reportedly reduced construction time, CO2 emissions, and waste. Prefabricated aluminum soffits and roof panels with a light grey opalescent finish are employed to minimize solar heat gain in the low-latitude location. Interior finishes include aluminum and glass-reinforced gypsum, selected for their low maintenance requirements, longevity, and reduced embodied carbon.
Operational efficiencies are supported by high-performance facades and intelligent HVAC building management systems. The centre’s roof is equipped with photovoltaic arrays and a rainwater harvesting system to generate renewable energy on-site and conserve water. The surrounding public spaces, including the plaza, garden terraces, and waterfront park, feature permeable surfaces and re-planted wetlands designed to mitigate flood risk and promote local biodiversity.
