The world of haute horlogerie is witnessing an intriguing evolution as luxury watch brands increasingly turn to fine artists for collaborations. Moving beyond traditional partnerships with product designers, these ventures aim to imbue timepieces with unique artistic sensibilities, creating pieces that are as much a work of art as they are functional instruments.

Artistic Endeavors

Brands like Alto, founded by Thibaut Guittard, are built entirely around artist collaborations. Alto’s debut watch, the Art 01, is a partnership with French sculptor Bernar Venet. This timepiece features a dial that incorporates a micro-sculpture by Venet, crafted from patinated bronze to mimic the Cor-Ten steel of his larger works. The dial’s shallow depth of 0.8mm was crucial for accommodating the artistic design while maintaining the watch’s slim profile and movement functionality. Guittard emphasizes that these collaborations must be meaningful, resulting in a piece of art in its own right.

Ressence is another brand embracing this artistic fusion. For its Type 9 watch, a collaboration with Belgian artist Jules Wittock, the dial showcases one of Wittock’s intricate maze drawings. The unique orbiting disc display of the Ressence watch is designed so that the word hidden within the maze is only fully readable in the dark at midnight, thanks to Super-luminova. Benoit Mintiens, founder of Ressence, notes that artist collaborations offer a fresh perspective, yielding results that watchmakers themselves might not conceive. He highlights that these partnerships bring a philosophical dimension to new designs, a stark contrast to many commercially driven collaborations.

Pushing Creative Boundaries

The challenge in these collaborations often lies in translating an artist’s vision into the constrained parameters of watchmaking. Artists may propose ideas that are difficult to scale, prohibitively expensive, or technically unfeasible within the delicate mechanics of a watch. Mintiens himself laughs about instances where artists have insisted on materials like translucent titanium, which can complicate the manufacturing process.

Lewis Heath, founder of British brands Anordain and Paulin, acknowledges that artist collaborations involve a degree of risk, with the true success of an artist’s concept on a watch often only becoming clear during the sampling phase. However, he notes that the resulting timepieces invariably stand out in a crowded market. Paulin has released watches featuring hand-painted abstract dials by Glasgow artist John Nicol, while Anordain has collaborated with Rachel Duckhouse, known for her etching, on the design of a watch movement visible through an exhibition caseback. Heath finds it beneficial that artists, often unfamiliar with existing watch trends, bring unconventional ideas to the table.

A New Canvas

For artists, collaborating with watch brands offers a novel opportunity to work on a miniature, moving canvas. This provides a different scale and challenge compared to their usual artistic mediums. The appeal for artists can lie in adapting their monumental or intricate designs to a highly precise and constrained environment.

The audience for these art-infused watches is often twofold: existing art collectors who are drawn to owning a unique piece by a favored artist, and watch enthusiasts looking to delve deeper into the art world. By bridging these two domains, these collaborations demystify the often-exclusive art scene for a new group of patrons.
