A new approach to indoor leisure spaces has emerged with the BIGX Super Sports Playground, designed by Fun Connection Design (Funconn) in collaboration with Ningnuo Investment Management Company. This project reinterprets the traditional indoor playground, transforming it into an immersive environment that draws heavily from digital culture and industrial aesthetics. The design aims to create a dynamic space that encourages movement, social interaction, and visual storytelling, moving beyond conventional functional zoning.

Digital Gaming Logic

The core concept behind BIGX is to integrate the logic of digital games into the physical environment. This creates a spatial framework where circulation, competition, and gathering are interconnected, offering a unique user experience. Funconn describes the venue as a ‘Digital Sports Innovation Lab,’ a physical space heavily influenced by the visual language and interactive models found in digital worlds.

Color and Material Palette

Fun Connection Design has moved away from typical sports facility color schemes, opting for a palette inspired by digital media and futuristic interfaces. A deliberate color system organizes the interior: ‘Digital Blue’ provides a continuous visual background, establishing a sense of immersion. In contrast, ‘Signal Orange’ is strategically used to highlight structural junctions, interactive interfaces, and key activity points. This high-contrast combination acts as a visual navigation system, guiding visitors through the space and indicating areas of interaction.

The material language reinforces this hybrid condition between high technology and industrial roughness. Exposed metal trusses, structural pipes, and illuminated surfaces are combined with digital-inspired graphics. This blend creates a tension between the physical infrastructure and the virtual environments that inspire the design, connecting it deeply to digital gaming culture.

Architectural Anchors and Visual Connections

Three major vertical structures serve as the architectural anchors of the BIGX playground: the BIGX viewing twin towers and the vertical competition tower. These elements combine circulation, observation, and activity functions. Their exposed steel frameworks, visible trusses, and industrial piping give the space a strong structural character.

To mitigate the visual weight of these large structures, transparent and semi-transparent materials are employed. Metal mesh, wire mesh railings, and translucent slide surfaces allow light and views to pass through, maintaining visual connections across different areas of the venue. This design choice enhances the sense of openness and connectivity within the space.

Layered Spectator System

The design utilizes changes in elevation to create multiple viewing relationships, forming a layered spectator system. An upper observation platform, intermediate lounge areas, and ground-level seating allow visitors to observe activities from various perspectives. This multi-level approach enriches the social dynamics of the playground. The interaction between structural elements, lighting, and circulation fosters a flexible environment suitable for sports, social gatherings, and brand experiences within a unified framework.

Integrated Functional Components

The design language extends to functional components and supporting infrastructure, ensuring visual continuity throughout the space. Entrance systems, lockers, changing areas, vending points, and equipment storage are all integrated into the overall visual strategy. The entrance turnstiles, for example, serve as transitional elements, using lighting and material changes to mark the shift from the exterior to the immersive interior. Supporting facilities are treated as extensions of the spatial system, with lockers, vending machines, and display elements designed to match the industrial-digital aesthetic.

Brand Identity Through Design

BIGX Super Sports Playground translates the brand’s themes of technology, competition, and punk aesthetics into a tangible environment. Spatial design is employed as a tool to express brand identity across three interconnected dimensions:

The visual dimension is defined by industrial materials, digital references, and high-contrast graphic elements that establish the venue’s atmosphere.
The experiential dimension is shaped by movement-based layouts, competitive zones, and social gathering areas designed to encourage user interaction.
The thematic dimension integrates sports, entertainment, and digital-inspired strategies to propose a new model for contemporary leisure environments.

BIGX Super Sports Playground represents a fusion of architecture, technology, and social experience, offering a forward-thinking model for leisure environments.
