Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Frank Gehry’s Final Museum, Opens December 2026
After nearly two decades of planning and construction, the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open to the public on December 11, 2026, becoming the latest landmark on Saadiyat Island’s cultural strip.

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the long-awaited museum designed by the late Frank Gehry, will open its doors to visitors on December 11, 2026, the Guggenheim Foundation and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism announced today. The opening date, set nearly 20 years after the project was first revealed, marks the culmination of one of the most delayed and debated cultural projects in the Gulf.
Long-awaited milestone
First announced in 2006, the museum was originally scheduled to open in 2013. Contract renegotiations, economic downturns and the global financial crisis repeatedly pushed back the timeline. Construction finally began in earnest in the mid-2010s, but the 2020 pandemic, supply chain disruptions and the death of Gehry in December 2025 added further uncertainty. Today’s confirmation of a concrete opening date finally gives the architecture world a fixed point on the calendar.
Design and architecture
Gehry conceived the building as a “skyline” of ten conical volumes, each rising at different heights, clad in stainless steel mesh, glass and onyx. The 125,000 sq ft (11,600 sq m) structure will house 30 galleries arranged around a towering central atrium. The museum “is designed to impress at every level,” the foundation stated. The organic, sculptural form echoes Gehry’s earlier museum work, most notably the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, but adapts the language to the desert climate and coastline of Abu Dhabi.
Inside, the collection will span modern and contemporary art from around the world, with works acquired since 2009. While the full opening exhibition list has not been released, the museum has previously shown selections from its holdings. A 2015 preview, titled “Seeing Through Light,” included pieces by Yayoi Kusama, Rachid Koraïchi, Robert Irwin, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian and Douglas Wheeler, hinting at the geographic and medium range of the collection.
Context of Saadiyat Island
The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is the centerpiece of Saadiyat Island, a 10-square-mile (26 sq km) cultural district off the coast of Abu Dhabi. It joins the Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel, which opened in 2017; the Zayed National Museum, designed by Foster + Partners, still under construction; and the Abrahamic Family House, by David Adjaye, completed in 2023. Also on the island is the under-construction Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi, a performing arts centre also designed by Gehry. Together, these institutions aim to transform Saadiyat into a global destination for art, architecture and culture.
Labor controversies and delays
The project has not been without controversy. Human rights groups repeatedly criticised the treatment of migrant labourers on Saadiyat Island construction sites, sparking protests and artist boycotts. In response, Gehry personally engaged a human rights lawyer to monitor site conditions. The Guggenheim Foundation has stated that it is committed to ethical labour practices, but independent monitoring reports have shown mixed progress. The opening date announcement did not include a detailed update on labour conditions, leaving that aspect of the project under ongoing scrutiny.
