Architect and engineer Carlo Ratti has turned his attention to one of Italy’s most ubiquitous everyday objects, the single-serve Campari Soda bottle, as part of a summer design series for Wallpaper*. Created in 1932, the vessel represents the first pre-mixed, single-serve aperitif in history, shifting the cocktail culture from the bartender’s counter directly into the hands of the public. Its defining characteristic remains its frosted, label-free inverted goblet shape, etched directly into the glass.

The original liquid inside the bottle dates back to 1860 when Gaspare Campari perfected a secret recipe in Novara, which was later scaled into an industrial empire by his son Davide. However, the container itself breaks away from conventional industrial design lineages due to its creator. Fortunato Depero, a prominent figure within the Italian Futurist movement and an inner circle member of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, designed the distinctive conical vessel.
