Cascade Architectural’s Fabricoil® coiled wire fabric systems are emerging as a highly adaptable solution for a variety of architectural needs, from facade screening and solar shading to creating unique aesthetic elements. The system’s versatility allows for application across projects of any scale, offering architects a less rigid alternative to traditional screening materials.

Versatile Applications

The coiled wire fabric, known as Fabricoil®, can be integrated into diverse building typologies. Its applications include solar shading and daylighting solutions, secure perimeter barriers, mechanical screening, and custom architectural mesh for both exterior and interior spaces. This adaptability makes it a valuable tool for designers seeking innovative materials.

Aesthetic and Functional Benefits

Andrew Schoenheit, vice president at Cascade Coil, highlighted the material’s distinct appearance. “The softer appearance of our installations and the fluidity of our material is what separates coiled wire fabric from other typically rigid screening solutions like expanded metal, perforated panels, or louvers,” he told The Architect’s Newspaper. The system provides control over light, transparency, airflow, and privacy through various weave sizes, wire gauges, and densities. Available in a range of natural metal finishes or powder-coated colors, the materials meet Red List Free criteria, aligning with sustainable design goals.

Project Showcases

Several case studies illustrate the broad applicability of Fabricoil systems:

VCU Health’s Adult Outpatient Pavilion in Richmond, Virginia, designed by HDR, utilizes Fabricoil to transform its parking garage into a visually striking feature. Over 40,000 square feet of the material wraps three sides of the building, serving as both an aesthetic element and mechanical screening. The system was engineered for enhanced fall and jump protection around the facility.

At Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Fitzgerald Collaborative Group designed the West Deck and South Deck parking garage complexes using Fabricoil. The long panels were installed efficiently across large spans, providing solar shading and safety benefits while maintaining airflow and reducing the need for mechanical ventilation.

In Phoenix, Arrington Watkins Architects specified a copper-clad Fabricoil system for the new police department headquarters. The mesh shields the ground level, offers interior views, and is installed on a sliding track for easy removal for window servicing.

Hedrick Middle School in Lewisville, Texas, designed by Stantec, employs Fabricoil in a vertical fin orientation to mitigate harsh sunlight. This application helps reduce solar heat gain and glare, improving occupant comfort without obstructing views or limiting daylight, unlike some rigid fin alternatives.

The Curtain of Courage December 2, 2015 Memorial in San Bernardino, California, designed by Hood Design Studio, incorporates Fabricoil for sculptural purposes. The material adds visual appeal and complements the memorial’s design, which commemorates 14 lives lost.

Installation and Engineering Support

Cascade Architectural offers an in-house engineering team with extensive international project experience. They provide design assistance and technical support throughout the project lifecycle, from early design phases to optimizing specifications and customizing attachment hardware. The systems are designed for ease of installation, efficient performance, and aesthetic appeal.
