Clap Studio Transforms Restaurant into an Immersive Sunset Experience in Valencia
Clap Studio designs Baovan, a restaurant in Valencia that takes diners on a visual journey from a forest to a beach, culminating in a simulated sunset and moonlight experience.

A new restaurant in Valencia, Spain, by Clap Studio, offers diners an immersive journey that mimics the experience of a beachside evening, complete with a simulated sunset. The project, named Baovan, draws inspiration from the adventurous travels of its founders and aims to transport guests through a series of distinct spatial experiences.
The restaurant’s concept is rooted in the founders’ initial venture into a handmade bao bun delivery business, which evolved into a dream of opening a specialized bao restaurant in Valencia. Living up to its slogan, “Beaches, beers, and buns,” Clap Studio designed Baovan’s interiors to evoke the feeling of a seaside party, even in the heart of the city.
The Forest Entrance
The dining experience begins before guests even enter the restaurant. The exterior of Baovan features a light green facade, signaling the start of the first thematic area, referred to as the “Forest.” Here, a porch area is adorned with hanging ropes that descend from the ceiling, creating the impression of dense, lush vegetation. This installation serves as a transitional space, softening the shift from the urban street to the restaurant’s interior and encouraging visitors to move through the space as if entering a different landscape. The ropes add texture, movement, and a sense of anticipation, offering glimpses of what lies beyond.
Transition to the Beach
Upon exiting the “Forest,” visitors enter a dramatically different atmosphere. The second zone features sand-colored walls, intended to evoke a beach environment. Above, the ceiling is designed to resemble a canopy of clouds. The interplay between the warm, earthy tones of the walls and the luminous elements of the ceiling creates a dreamlike ambiance, distinct from the surrounding city. Throughout this area, shifting colors subtly reference water and sky, reinforcing the coastal inspiration. The cloud-like ceiling also plays a role in the lighting, reflecting light and subtly altering the room’s mood as the evening progresses.
The Sunset Spectacle
The most striking element of Baovan is found in its third and final main area. A large, crescent moon-shaped screen immediately captures attention. This installation, developed by Vitamin Studio, is programmed to display the colors of a sunset, gradually evolving throughout the evening. The display’s timing is synchronized with the dinner service, allowing guests to witness a full sunset simulation during their meal. As the colors shift across the screen, their reflections move through the space, adding another layer of atmospheric depth. This element functions not merely as decoration but as a dynamic backdrop that transforms the room’s ambiance over time.
Moonlit Seclusion
Tucked away within the final area is an intimate private dining room designed for ten guests. In this more secluded space, the sunset experience transitions into moonlight. This smaller area maintains the restaurant’s overall visual narrative while providing a more private setting. Circular and crescent moon motifs are incorporated throughout the room, echoing the shape of the bao buns and reinforcing the celestial theme established by the sunset installation. These recurring shapes help to unify the restaurant’s narrative, connecting the food, light, and interior architecture into a cohesive experience.
Baovan is presented as more than just a place to eat. Through its carefully orchestrated sequence of immersive spaces, Clap Studio aims to elevate a simple meal into a visual journey from forest to beach, sunset, and finally, moonlight. By integrating dramatic lighting, sculptural installations, and subtle references to the restaurant’s signature bao buns, the project seeks to create a memorable experience that lingers with diners long after their meal concludes.
