Jisoo Yoo’s ‘Dream House’ Floats on Collective Wishes
Artist Jisoo Yoo's participatory installation transforms personal dreams and desires into a temporary, floating architectural structure at Les Tanneries in France.

Artist Jisoo Yoo has unveiled “Dream House,” a unique participatory installation that explores the tangible impact of individual aspirations on the built environment. The project, showcased as part of the (F)ESTIVALES at Les Tanneries – Centre d’art contemporain in France, invites the public to contribute their dreams and wishes, transforming them into the very fabric of a temporary, floating architecture.
Shaping the World We Inhabit
“How do the dreams and desires we carry shape the landscape of the world we inhabit?” Yoo poses this central question, suggesting that while dreams may feel intensely personal, they are intrinsically linked to the social conditions, values, and possibilities that surround us. “Dream House” aims to bridge this gap, translating private reflections into a shared architectural experience that demonstrates how collective desires can momentarily manifest a world into existence.
The installation begins with a simple yet profound concept: the collection of personal narratives. Participants are encouraged to write and draw their dreams and wishes onto garments. These everyday items of clothing then become more than personal archives; they are transformed into the structural elements of the “Dream House.”
A Fragile, Emotional Architecture
Each contributed garment, marked with handwritten texts and drawings, supports a suspended roof. The movement of this roof is designed to respond dynamically to the accumulated presence of people’s collective wishes, dreams, and needs. This responsiveness means “Dream House” is not a static structure. Instead, it exists in a state of flux, appearing and disappearing as an ephemeral form, dependent entirely on communal participation.
Yoo envisions architecture as something fragile, emotional, and continually negotiated. “Dream House” challenges the conventional notion of a home built from solid materials, proposing instead that a home is also constructed from shared aspirations that require ongoing care and active participation to endure.
The Fleeting Nature of Existence
The floating structure itself embodies both the powerful creative force of desire and the inherent impermanence of existence. “The house briefly emerges through people’s dreams, rises and falls, and eventually disappears again,” Yoo explains. “For me, this floating house represents both the power of desire to bring a world into being and the impermanence of life—the understanding that no form can remain fixed or endure forever.”
By embracing constant motion, “Dream House” actively resists permanence. It champions transformation, suggesting that the worlds we inhabit are not static but are continuously shaped and reshaped through our shared dreams and collective efforts.
