KIBEKOUMUTEN Inc., a Japanese design studio led by Masahiro Kibe, has unveiled ‘Observation.01’, a furniture project that deliberately places material behavior at the forefront of the design process. Rather than imposing a preconceived form, the project iteratively develops through a deep engagement with the characteristics of its chosen materials, emphasizing observation as a fundamental design method.

The Genesis of Observation.01

The project originated from an inquiry into the role of material in design, specifically focusing on Kvadrat Argo 2, a long-pile textile. Instead of a conventional approach of applying fabric to a finished object, the design journey for ‘Observation.01’ was built around a series of full-scale mock-ups. This hands-on method allowed the KIBEKOUMUTEN team to meticulously study the textile’s performance at edges, corners, and how it interacts with the human body. These direct observations became the primary source of information, influencing every subsequent decision regarding the bench’s proportion, structural integrity, color palette, and detailing.

Material as the Primary Driver

The resulting bench features a powder-coated steel frame that provides a simple, tubular structure with gently curved members. This minimalist frame is designed to support and showcase the Kvadrat Argo 2 textile, which defines the piece as both a visual and tactile centerpiece. The development process prioritized the textile’s performance and aesthetic qualities, with structural configurations, dimensions, and finishes being continuously refined in response to how the material behaved. This approach stands in contrast to traditional design practices where material choices often serve to realize an existing design concept.

A Process of Iteration and Emergence

‘Observation.01’ is presented not as a final, definitive product, but as a documentation of an ongoing design dialogue. KIBEKOUMUTEN Inc. highlights that the bench’s form emerges through a continuous cycle of testing, interpretation, and adjustment. This iterative process is central to the studio’s broader research into observation as a design methodology and its potential to generate innovative outcomes in both product and architectural design. The project underscores the idea that design can be a responsive exploration, guided by the inherent properties of materials.

Key facts

Feature Detail
Project Name Observation.01: On Material and Judgment
Studio KIBEKOUMUTEN Inc.
Lead Designer Masahiro Kibe
Primary Material Kvadrat Argo 2 (long-pile textile)

Design Method Iterative observation of material behavior

This project offers a valuable case study for designers and architects interested in material-driven design processes. By foregrounding the tactile and structural qualities of textiles, KIBEKOUMUTEN Inc. demonstrates an alternative path to product development, one that is deeply responsive to the physical world and the inherent potential within materials. The emphasis on observation and iteration suggests a more organic and adaptive approach to design, which can lead to unexpected and compelling results.
