NYU Launches Interdisciplinary Fellowship to Foster Urban Innovation
The Schack Institute of Real Estate at New York University has introduced the Building Better Cities Collaborative (BBCC), a new fellowship program aimed at bringing together professionals from diverse fields to develop solutions for more sustainable, equitable, and profitable urban environments.

New York University’s Schack Institute of Real Estate has launched a new interdisciplinary fellowship program designed to cultivate innovative solutions for urban challenges. The Building Better Cities Collaborative (BBCC) aims to bring together a diverse group of professionals to address the complexities of creating more sustainable, equitable, and profitable cities.
Applications for the fellowship are currently open, with a deadline of July 29. The BBCC is seeking “high-potential” professionals with 7 to 15 years of experience across various sectors of the built environment, including architecture, real estate, finance, community development, technology, and policy.
Urban Development Focus
The core mission of the BBCC is to foster collaboration and idea generation among fellows. By connecting participants with each other and with an established network of industry leaders, the program intends to produce proposals that contribute to the advancement of urban centers. The fellowship will provide opportunities for in-depth research, design development, and the practical application of new ideas through leadership training and market positioning strategies.
This initiative is a significant step towards integrating different facets of urban development, with a notable emphasis on bridging the gap between architects and designers and the broader development community. This integration is seen as crucial for achieving improved outcomes for cities, especially in an era of rapid technological evolution.
Program Leadership and Network
The Building Better Cities Collaborative is being spearheaded by Marc Norman, associate dean at NYU’s Schack Institute of Real Estate, in collaboration with Will Hunter, founder of the London School of Architecture. Hunter and Norman’s professional connection dates back to 2021 when Hunter was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard.
The program boasts an impressive industry network that includes notable figures and organizations. Participants from a pilot cohort included Roberto Bannura, a partner at Steven Holl Architects. The network also features luminaries such as RIBA Gold Medal winner Niall McLaughlin, and leaders from prominent firms including KPF, SOM, Henning Larsen, Arup, and Kieran Timberlake. This extensive network is expected to provide fellows with invaluable mentorship and access to industry insights.
Global Convenings and Projects
The fellowship cohort will be distributed across both London and New York. During the initial two days of the fall semester in 2026, fellows will convene in New York City for an immersive experience that will include tours of development sites, such as those in Gowanus. As the spring semester commences, the cohort will gather again in London. In London, Niall McLaughlin is slated to lead a charrette, offering fellows a focused design and planning workshop.
Fellows will engage in both a collaborative group project and an individual fellowship studio project. These projects are anticipated to explore critical areas such as the future of infrastructure, housing solutions, healthcare systems, and other vital urban sectors. The outcomes of these projects are planned to be disseminated through white papers and various other publications, ensuring that the insights and innovations developed within the program reach a wider audience. Looking ahead, the BBCC plans to leverage NYU’s global campuses to further connect fellows with international opportunities and perspectives.
