Twin Timber Gateways Mark Entrance to Russian Architectural Park

CUBE+ Creative Collective has completed a striking pair of timber structures, titled “Protivo Stoyanie” (‘Counter-Standing’), which serve as contemporary propylaea at the entrance to an open-air architectural park in Russia’s Kostroma Region. Located along the Galich Zaōzerye ecological trail, these twin gateways, finished in 2025, transform a simple transit route into a destination for orientation, rest, and observation.

Entrance and Orientation

Positioned at the convergence of forest and field on a prominent site, the ‘Counter-Standing’ structures act as an entry marker, a visual device, and a spatial transition between contrasting landscapes. The name itself, ‘Protivo Stoyanie’, reflects the opposing placement of the two identical elements, symbolizing the dialogue between architecture and nature, and the interplay between contemporary design and the area’s historical context.

The installation features two timber structures facing each other. Visitors approaching from the forest encounter a sequence of information panels and viewfinders that direct attention to specific landmarks within the architectural park. From the field side, integrated benches offer a space for visitors to pause and absorb the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Collectively, these elements not only highlight individual destinations but also frame sweeping vistas across the entire park.

Reinterpreting Regional Ornament

A key design feature by CUBE+ Creative Collective is the reinterpretation of regional ornamentation. The vertical timber surfaces incorporate a modern rendition of a traditional carved motif found on historic wooden window frames in Galich, locally known as the ‘frog’s foot.’ This pattern moves beyond mere decoration, establishing a direct link between the new intervention and the region’s architectural heritage, traditional craftsmanship, and distinct visual identity.

Design and Construction Constraints

The propylaea were constructed within the specific constraints of the Summer Drevolution’25 architectural workshop. These limitations included a condensed construction timeline, a restricted supply of timber, and a design process that was closely integrated with manual fabrication methods. The timber used for the project was intentionally left untreated, without any protective oils or varnishes. This deliberate choice allows the material to age naturally, weathering over time through exposure to the elements such as rain, snow, wind, and sunlight.

Wayfinding and Landscape Intervention

By framing views, organizing movement along the ecological trail, and referencing local cultural traditions, ‘Counter-Standing’ functions as both a landscape intervention and a crucial wayfinding element. The project successfully establishes a recognizable entrance to the architectural park while simultaneously interpreting the site’s natural landscape, existing routes, and historical ornament through a contemporary architectural lens. The untreated timber will gradually acquire a patina, further integrating the structures into their natural setting and reflecting the passage of time.
