Barcelona has become the epicenter of global architectural discourse with the commencement of the 2026 UIA World Congress of Architects. Under the overarching theme “Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition,” the congress brings together a broad spectrum of professionals, academics, and students to confront urgent issues such as climate change, housing crises, material circularity, and the evolving role of architecture in society.

The congress, which runs until July 2, is amplified by Barcelona’s designation as the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture for 2026. This dual role provides a platform for events that extend beyond the formal congress sessions, embedding architectural discussions within wider ecological, social, and cultural transformations.

A significant moment during the week was the presentation of the 2026 UIA Gold Medal to renowned architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. The award ceremony, held at the iconic Basílica de la Sagrada Família, recognized Souto de Moura’s substantial and lasting contributions to the discipline, particularly his contextually sensitive designs and precise material use, which continue to influence contemporary practice. Complementing this recognition, a series of exhibitions and events are celebrating Portuguese architecture throughout the congress.

The role of architecture in addressing natural hazards has also come into sharp focus. Recent seismic events in Venezuela, Japan, and Northern California have underscored the critical importance of planning, infrastructure, and building practices in enhancing resilience. These pressing concerns inform many of the dialogues at the UIA Congress, as practitioners and researchers explore how design and policy can mitigate risks and foster more robust communities.

Exploring the past and future of architectural practice, the exhibition “What is This? A Spa, a Gym, a Zoo for Tiny Animals?” at the Palau Victòria Eugènia offers a new perspective on the Fundació Mies van der Rohe’s archive. Through models, drawings, films, and documentation of interventions at the Barcelona Pavilion, the exhibition frames the archive not as a static historical record but as a dynamic and evolving testament to architectural discourse.

New Projects Showcase Diverse Approaches

Beyond the congress discussions, recent project announcements highlight a range of strategies for shaping the built environment. The World Monuments Fund’s “Irreplaceable America” list identifies ten heritage sites facing critical preservation challenges ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary, emphasizing the need for long-term conservation in the face of climate change, deferred maintenance, and development pressures.

In Oman, Foster + Partners, in collaboration with Dar Al-Handasah, has unveiled a master plan for Al Najd Agricultural City. This self-sustaining settlement aims to integrate agriculture, housing, and resource management, aligning with the country’s Vision 2040. Meanwhile, in Finland, Snøhetta’s master plan for Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium seeks to reimagine the modernist complex as a destination for wellness, hospitality, and culture, while diligently preserving its architectural heritage.

Henning Larsen Introduces Environmental Analysis Platform

A notable development in design technology comes from Henning Larsen, whose technology spinout Nflection has launched jifto. This new environmental analysis platform is designed for seamless integration into the early stages of architectural design. Jifto provides real-time simulations for sunlight, wind, microclimate, stormwater, earthworks, and daylight, incorporating data for both current and projected climate conditions through 2075. Building on over a decade of research in climate-responsive design, jifto aims to democratize environmental performance assessment, empowering design teams to incorporate crucial climate and site-specific data from project inception.

On the Radar

UNStudio has completed the Korean Football Park in Cheonan, a vast 450,427-square-meter campus designed to be the new home for the Korean Football Association. The project includes extensive training facilities, stadiums, and administrative headquarters, all organized around a central public plaza and designed to respond to the surrounding landscape.

Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) has also completed the Tang Wing for American Democracy at The New York Historical Society, a 71,000-square-foot addition to the institution.
