The new headquarters for the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NBRK) in Astana, designed by the renowned architectural firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), has officially opened and is now fully operational. The building serves as an integrated campus, consolidating the bank’s various departments and providing space for up to 800 employees.

Environmental Resilience in Extreme Climates

Located in the semi-arid steppe of central Kazakhstan, Astana experiences dramatic temperature fluctuations, ranging from -40°C to +40°C annually. The NBRK headquarters’ design directly addresses these challenging climatic conditions. Environmental considerations were a primary driver, leading to a highly consolidated composition enveloped in carved local limestone louvres.

The architectural form draws inspiration from the natural geological formations of the Kazakh steppe, reflecting undulating striations sculpted by millennia of climatic forces. The design meticulously considers factors such as annual solar radiation, temperature, humidity, prevailing winds, air quality, and precipitation to optimize environmental performance and ensure employee comfort.

Integrated Design and Passive Systems

The 13-storey cubic structure interweaves various departments, with a full-height communal winter garden at its core. This central void is visible from every workstation, enhancing natural light penetration deep into the building’s core. The winter garden functions as a thermal chimney, facilitating passive airflow by exhausting warm air through roof vents and drawing cooler air in at lower levels. This system significantly reduces the reliance on mechanical ventilation and cooling during warmer months.

During colder periods, the glazed winter garden captures solar heat, which is then circulated and absorbed by the building’s high thermal mass structure. This creates a transitional climate zone, acting as a thermal buffer for the surrounding office floors.

Façade and Materiality

The building’s façade features a unitized curtain wall system with triple-glazed sections. Overlapping louvres, crafted from locally sourced limestone, provide essential solar shading and act as a protective buffer against the harsh winter snow and blizzards prevalent in Astana. From a distance, the louvres create an impression of solidity, but segments open to reveal the transparency of the winter garden, ensuring ample natural light and city views for all employees.

Internal Connectivity and Sustainable Materials

Bridges connect the office floors surrounding the winter garden on every third level, creating communal areas that foster interaction between departments. The primary structural system utilizes locally produced reinforced concrete, chosen for its high thermal mass and its contribution to reducing embodied carbon by eliminating emissions associated with long-distance material transportation.

The NBRK headquarters is strategically located between the city’s government district and its international airport, with convenient access to public transportation, including bus routes and the Astana Light Metro system.
