A significant renovation project by Atelier AJO in Pont-de-Salars, France, has breathed new life into a long-vacant farmhouse, transforming it into a cohesive and inviting retreat for family and friends. The project focused on rehabilitating a structure that once housed agricultural workers, integrating its three main volumes—an open barn, a central building, and a dovecote—into a unified living space.

Creating Continuity

Previously fragmented into small, compartmentalized rooms, the farmhouse’s three core volumes lacked a cohesive flow. Atelier AJO addressed this by creating two key openings within the load-bearing walls. These passages now connect the spaces from the dovecote tower to the planted barn, establishing a new sense of continuity throughout the property. This architectural intervention was crucial in bridging the internal spaces and establishing a connection with the outdoor environment.

Reimagining Outdoor Living

The renovation also prioritized the creation of a true outdoor living area, a feature previously absent from the farmhouse. The former barn has been reimagined as a primary outlook from the living space, acting as a semi-interior landscape. Its curved forms echo the newly introduced openings and engage in a dialogue with the farm courtyard. This space elegantly frames a preserved and restored massive stone fireplace, which has been brought back into use, adding a focal point of warmth and history.

Respecting Existing Features

The interior layout meticulously follows the logic of the existing facade openings, with none being altered or removed. Instead, the design maximizes the unique qualities and potential of each aperture. On the upper floor, intermediate ceilings were removed to reveal the original volumes and enhance natural light penetration from the existing dormer windows on the main facade. The dovecote tower has been restored to its original vertical character, with the mechanisms of the bell structure, once central to farm life, now exposed and functional once more.

Flexible and Adaptable Spaces

The newly designed spaces are conceived for flexible and evolving uses, ensuring adaptability over time. The upper-level living room is a prime example, designed to serve multiple functions. It can transform into a dormitory during gatherings with integrated storage for mattresses in stepped seating, function as a private performance venue with tiered seating and a curtain, or serve as a screening room. This versatility allows the space to cater to various needs and activities.

Sustainable Renovation and Material Palette

Accompanying the spatial reorganization is a comprehensive thermal renovation. The substantial thickness of the existing masonry walls, combined with new internal insulation, contributes significantly to the building’s thermal inertia and overall comfort. This insulation also reveals the original stone facades, which had been hidden beneath a non-breathable cement render, adding both aesthetic appeal and improved performance. The project also features bespoke integrated furniture, including masonry benches that acknowledge floor level changes, continuous cabinetry concealing room entrances, stepped seating for dovecote access with integrated storage, and a library wall highlighting a blind wall behind a circular opening. The material palette combines raw elements like concrete, ash wood, stainless steel, and sheep’s wool with bold color accents, creating a dynamic interplay with the softness of curved lines and natural tones.
