Montreal’s Olympic Stadium has been a landmark of 1976 Summer Games architecture, but its roof has been a persistent source of trouble. Decades of leaks, maintenance costs, and safety hazards from falling icicles have plagued the structure. Now, German architecture studio GMP Architekten is part of a team replacing the original membrane roof with a steel deck, aiming to solve the longstanding problems without discarding the original architectural intent.

The stadium, originally designed by French architect Roger Taillibert, features a distinctive inclined tower and a retractable membrane roof that was never fully completed as intended. Over the years, the roof has undergone several repair attempts, none of which fully resolved the technical issues. Icicles forming on the membrane surface posed a risk to pedestrians and the structure itself, leading to periodic closures and public frustration.

Why the roof was a problem
