BYD’s Ultra-Fast Flash Charging Network Set for Canadian Debut

BYD is preparing to launch its high-power “Flash Charging” network in Canada, marking the first confirmed deployment of this technology in North America. The network, capable of adding approximately 250 miles (400 km) of range in as little as five minutes, was revealed through a recent job posting for a manager in Toronto tasked with overseeing the expansion strategy across Canada.

This move indicates BYD’s commitment to not only selling electric vehicles in the Canadian market but also to building and operating its own charging infrastructure, a strategy reminiscent of Tesla’s early Supercharger network development.

Megawatt Charging Power

BYD initially unveiled its 1,000 kW Flash Charging system in March 2025, designed for 1,000-volt electric vehicles. This system has since been upgraded to an impressive 1,500 kW with the integration of the second-generation Blade battery. This charging power is more than triple that of any currently deployed charging solutions in North America. BYD has already established over 5,700 Flash Charging stations in China within approximately one year, and the company is reportedly deploying charging power at a significantly higher monthly rate than Tesla’s Supercharger network additions.

Addressing Canadian Market Needs

The introduction of Flash Charging to Canada is particularly timely. Canada recently reduced its tariff on Chinese EVs from 100% to 6.1% under a quota system, paving the way for increased EV imports. BYD has confirmed plans for 20 dealerships in Canada, with an initial focus on Toronto.

Furthermore, the second-generation Blade battery, a key component of BYD’s charging solution, offers substantial benefits for the Canadian climate. The company claims it can charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes, even at temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F). This directly addresses one of the major concerns for EV adoption in Canada: the slowdown in charging speed during cold winter months.

A Leap in Charging Speed

In comparison, Tesla’s latest V4 Supercharger cabinets offer a maximum of 500 kW, and most North American EVs have a sustained charging capability of around 350 kW. BYD’s megawatt-class charging stations, paired with integrated battery storage to mitigate grid impact, position Canada to potentially surpass the United States in charging speed accessibility. The job posting’s emphasis on “power grid upgrades” highlights the collaborative approach BYD is taking with local utility partners.

Strategic Expansion

BYD’s proactive approach to establishing charging infrastructure before the widespread arrival of its vehicles reflects a strategic understanding of market entry barriers. Charging anxiety, especially in challenging winter conditions, is a significant hurdle for new EV brands. By mirroring Tesla’s successful strategy of building out its charging network early, BYD aims to create a strong competitive advantage.
