Dallas’s signature architecture-themed event, the Form Follows Fitness 5K, has reached a significant milestone, raising over $2 million for design education since its inception. The 15th anniversary race, held on Saturday, May 16, gathered more than 60 participants, including architects, designers, civic leaders, and community supporters, at Community Beer Company.

This year’s event generated $221,358.07, marking it as the third-highest fundraising total in the race’s history. This contribution brings the cumulative charitable impact of the Form Follows Fitness 5K to over $2 million. The event also set records in its 15th year, with 3,973 registrations, $308,000 in sponsorship revenue, and 184 industry teams participating. Over its 15-year run, the 5K has seen a total of 44,588 participants.

The Form Follows Fitness 5K has evolved into more than just a race; it has become a unifying force for the architecture, engineering, construction, planning, and fitness communities. The funds raised are dedicated to creating opportunities for students, supporting research, expanding public education initiatives, and connecting residents with the significance of the built environment.

Origins of the Event

The inspiration for the Form Follows Fitness 5K stemmed from a walking tour of the Dallas Arts District in 2010. Co-founder Patrick Glenn described the moment as a realization of the potential to create an event that intertwined health, community, and architecture in an engaging manner. What began as a meaningful idea has since become a cherished Dallas tradition.

“What started as a meaningful idea has grown into a Dallas tradition that celebrates architecture, promotes public engagement, and supports educational programs and scholarships for future generations of designers and architects,” said Patrick Glenn. He highlighted the event’s success in strengthening the connection between the public and the design community while supporting educational endeavors.

Community Collaboration and Impact

Briar Glenn, co-founder of the Form Follows Fitness 5K, emphasized the power of community collaboration in the race’s sustained growth. “Celebrating the Form Follows Fitness 5K’s 15th anniversary is a tremendous milestone,” she stated. The race has become the primary fundraising initiative for The Architecture and Design Foundation, enabling the expansion of programs such as Build Your City!, the Exhibition Series, Architecture and Design Exchange programming, and Designing My Future Camps.

“Beyond race day, the 5K has become a catalyst for deeper community engagement, meaningful industry partnerships, and new opportunities to inspire the next generation through the power of architecture and design,” Briar Glenn added.

Dallas’s Architectural Spirit

Norman Alston, president-elect of The Architecture and Design Foundation, views the race as a reflection of Dallas’s architectural character. “I love that the Form Follows Fitness 5K was born out of walking through our city and looking at the architecture,” Alston commented. “It’s testimony to the quality of Dallas architecture that, besides being beautiful, it can inspire people in other important aspects of their lives.”

Eric Lindberg, race director for the Form Follows Fitness 5K, noted the unwavering commitment from the architecture industry each year. He described the event as the largest industry gathering in North Texas and more than just a race, encompassing participants from the architecture and design fields, as well as the running and walking community, families, friends, and colleagues. The race course itself is a notable feature, guiding participants through the West End, Downtown, the Arts District, and Uptown, concluding at Klyde Warren Park.

Corporate Support

Marc Blackson, president of Blackson Brick, expressed that supporting the Form Follows Fitness 5K aligns with the company’s mission and values. “Supporting Form Follows Fitness is not only a commitment to giving back, it’s a strategic alignment of business objectives with meaningful impact, strengthening both the Foundation and the architecture community it serves,” Blackson said.

About The Architecture and Design Foundation

The Architecture and Design Foundation serves as North Texas’s public resource for architecture, design, and the built environment. Through educational programs, public events, and community outreach, the Foundation aims to enhance public understanding of how thoughtful design influences living, working, learning, and gathering spaces. A key initiative is Designing My Future, a camp series for students aged 6-18 that introduces architecture, engineering, and construction through hands-on activities led by industry professionals. These camps foster STEM learning, creative problem-solving, and career exploration. The Foundation also offers family-friendly programming, including Build Your City!, LEGO build days, workshops, guided architecture tours, exhibitions, and public discussions on sustainability, preservation, and urban planning. Annually, the organization awards between $40,000 and $60,000 in scholarships, fellowships, and research grants to high school students.
