Feldman Architecture Completes Bend Hideaway Residence in Oregon

Feldman Architecture has completed a new residence in Bend, Oregon, named Bend Hideaway. The project was commissioned by empty nesters relocating from Portland, who desired a home that would serve as an escape and accommodate their active lifestyle, including space for a lap pool and a home gym. The design also needed to provide private guest rooms for visiting grown children.

Site Response

The design carefully navigates the complexities of its site. It shields occupants from neighboring properties to the northeast while opening up westward toward a 650-acre nature preserve. This orientation provides unobstructed views of the surrounding forest and direct access to hiking and cross-country skiing trails. The private wing of the home extends to protect an outdoor lap pool and sitting area, acting as a buffer against strong winds and nearby residences, ensuring privacy for the occupants.

Public and Private Zones

The public spaces are arranged perpendicularly to the private wing. This area houses a great room that seamlessly opens onto an outdoor patio and firepit, creating a sheltered living space ideal for cooler Oregon evenings. A distinct feature is a glassy, windowed bridge that connects the public and private zones, creating a sense of transition and compression between the two distinct areas of the home.

Interior Courtyards and Roof Design

To break up the linear form of the private wing, courtyards are integrated within. These spaces invite natural light and garden views into the guest bedrooms and offices. Within the great room, a dynamic roof form runs diagonally, with clerestory windows strategically placed to open up to the surrounding tree canopy, further integrating the interior with the natural environment.

Material Palette and Aesthetic

The homeowners, admirers of modern design and former owners of a Richard Neutra home, were keen on exploring crisp geometries and durable materials. The design incorporates non-combustible paneling and concrete flooring, suited for the mountainous site. The exterior features operable wood screens that provide shade for interior spaces and add warmth and textural interest. The interior material palette is a sophisticated interplay of black steel, warm wood, white plaster, and concrete, creating a dynamic backdrop that complements the snowy, forested views.
