Foster + Partners Unveils Jia Art Gallery in Shanghai with Ribbed Tubular Glass Facades

Foster + Partners has designed and completed the Jia Art gallery, a new cultural hub located in Shanghai’s Putuo district. The building’s design draws inspiration from the natural geometry of flowers found in the adjacent Changfeng Park, resulting in a stepped, curvilinear form that evokes a cluster of petals. This architectural concept aims to create a prominent social and artistic center within the Changfeng development.

The gallery’s stepped silhouette is wrapped in distinctive ribbed glass facades. These facades are constructed using tubular glass, which is supported and framed by curved stainless steel tubes that extend vertically along the walls and also contour the underside of the building’s roof and cantilevered sections. This material choice not only defines the building’s aesthetic but also contributes to its visual dynamism.

Why it matters

Inside, a double-height atrium serves as the central organizing element, facilitating the flow of natural light into the exhibition spaces. The northern section of the building houses the main galleries, while the southern portion is dedicated to flexible exhibition, event, and educational spaces intended for community engagement.

Foster + Partners founder Norman Foster emphasized the project’s role in integrating art and culture into urban environments. “Jia Art is a project that demonstrates the significance of embedding art and culture in our cities,” Foster stated. “It will bring life to the public spaces, nurturing a sense of community identity, while playing an important role in integrating our new Changfeng development into the wider fabric of Shanghai.”

Context

Senior partner John Blythe elaborated on the design’s intent: “Drawing on the geometry of a blossoming flower, the gallery is characterised by its curvilinear form that appears to grow outwards from its centre. The building’s inherent symmetry establishes a sense of calm and balance in this fast-paced city.” The outward-stepping upper levels create overhangs that provide sheltered public space beneath, further integrating the building with its surroundings.

The interior design of the atrium echoes the exterior’s architectural language, featuring walls lined with steel tubes that cascade over balconies, creating a visually cohesive experience. The Jia Art gallery is positioned as a key social hub for the Changfeng development, intended to foster community identity and enhance the public realm.

This project by Foster + Partners adds to their portfolio of significant cultural and public buildings. Recent projects by the studio that have garnered attention include the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, notable for its distinctive ventilation towers, and proposed plans for a sculpture garden adjacent to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
