New Foundation Launched to Support Emerging Creatives, Honoring Hugh Devlin’s Legacy
The Hugh Devlin Foundation aims to provide crucial legal, financial, and commercial advice to nascent talents in the creative industries, mirroring the late advisor's dedication to fostering artistic careers.

A new initiative, the Hugh Devlin Foundation, has been established to support emerging talents within the creative industries, carrying forward the legacy of the late Hugh Devlin, a respected lawyer and advisor. The foundation aims to provide critical pro bono legal, financial, and commercial advice to nascent creatives, helping them navigate pivotal career moments.
Devlin, a former partner at international law firm Withers and founder of his own consultancy, Delightful, was known for his deep commitment to the creative sector. He advised a wide range of professionals, from independent designers and artists to global luxury brand executives, perfumers, and entrepreneurs. His reputation extended beyond mere legal expertise; he was recognized for his generosity, protective approach to creative talent, and willingness to offer pro bono assistance at crucial junctures, such as advising on problematic contracts or making key introductions.
Por que importa
The foundation was launched by Devlin’s wife, Sarah Polden Devlin, at the London Design Museum. It has garnered significant support from prominent figures in the creative world, including Anya Hindmarch, Charlotte Tilbury, Christopher and Tammy Kane, Sam McKnight, Sarah Mower, and Edward Barber, many of whom credit Devlin with shaping their careers. A network of legal, accounting, and commercial advisors are volunteering their expertise to the foundation.
Addressing the launch event, Polden Devlin highlighted her late husband’s role as a problem-solver and connector. “Hugh was a problem solver, whatever form it took or scale it presented at,” she stated. “His love and respect for creativity saw this expressed through his willingness to step in wherever he could. He also had a remarkable ability to connect people with exactly the expertise they needed. We want to replicate that willingness and efficiency – in an inevitably more structured way – as compared to a single person acting spontaneously.”
The establishment of the Hugh Devlin Foundation arrives at a time when creative professionals face increasing challenges, including intellectual property theft, complex contracts, and the rapid evolution of technologies like generative AI. The foundation seeks to bridge the gap between creative talent and the professional advice needed to build sustainable businesses.
Anya Hindmarch emphasized the void left by Devlin’s passing and the importance of the foundation’s work. “Hugh was the person you could go to, who would protect and fight for creatives,” Hindmarch commented. “The creative industries are less protected without Hugh’s presence. I know that he would be rooting for the work this Foundation will do in his memory. I am sure its work will support, protect and even save some of the creativity and brands of the future. What a legacy that will be.”
Practical Support for Creatives
The foundation’s operational model, as explained by director Jade Mitchell, is designed to be practical and impactful. Emerging creatives, freelancers, and small businesses can apply for pro bono assistance, with the foundation matching applicants to relevant professionals. “We’re really looking to make sure we offer the right intervention at the right moment,” Mitchell said. “This means we’re focused on situations where timely expert advice can prevent a problem from becoming something much bigger.”
Beyond direct one-to-one advice, the foundation plans to develop its website into a comprehensive resource. This will include guidance from its founding partners and organizations such as the British Fashion Council, the Sarabande Foundation, and ACID. Collaborations with universities and colleges are also planned to enhance commercial education for creative students.
“Many graduates leave university with incredible creative talent but very little understanding of contracts, intellectual property, finance or running a business,” Mitchell added. “If we can help someone avoid signing a damaging contract or understand the value of their intellectual property before they’re in difficulty, that’s every bit as valuable as helping them resolve a crisis afterwards.”
The foundation’s mission is particularly relevant in the current landscape, where artificial intelligence is reshaping creative fields and raising new questions about copyright, licensing, and ownership. The Hugh Devlin Foundation aims to equip creatives with the knowledge and support necessary to navigate these evolving challenges and secure their future.
