La Croix Residence by Luc Plante Architecture + Design Integrates with Eastern Townships Landscape
A contemporary residence by Luc Plante Architecture + Design seamlessly merges with the mountainside in Quebec's Eastern Townships, utilizing A-shaped forms and dual-sided fireplaces to enhance natural light and landscape views.

Luc Plante Architecture + Design has completed the La Croix residence, a striking contemporary home situated in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. The design philosophy behind the project centers on integrating the structure with its natural surroundings, employing geometric forms to maximize views and natural light.
Mountainside Integration
The residence is carefully nestled into the mountainside, designed to unfold in levels that follow the natural contours of the land, drawing a parallel to a waterfall. Access to the property is facilitated by a path that naturally traces the slope, offering two distinct entry points. The primary access is at the upper floor level, leading to the main entrance sheltered by a carport. A secondary, more discreet entrance is accessible via a path that winds through the surrounding woods, leading to a lower level.
Architectural Features
The architecture of La Croix is characterized by its contemporary yet classic aesthetic, notably enhanced by the symmetry of its facades. Signature A-shaped and triangular forms are prevalent throughout the design, strategically employed to capture expansive vistas and optimize sunlight penetration. A notable example of this is a triangular window positioned above the kitchen, which allows zenithal light to illuminate the living area. The structure is anchored to the site by robust columns, contributing to the airy and luminous quality of the interior spaces.
Interior Design and Spatial Organization
Internally, the common areas are conceived as an open-plan space, designed to offer unobstructed views of the splendid Eastern Townships landscape. A prominent, double-sided fireplace serves as a focal point, dividing the living area and imparting an intimate character to the dining room. This dining space is further enhanced by windows on all sides, further connecting occupants with the external environment. Adjacent to the common areas, an outdoor terrace extends the living space, providing areas for relaxation and contemplation.
