Japanese omnidirectional speaker brand Listude has opened a new headquarters in Hokuto, Yamanashi, that functions as a production workshop, concert hall, listening room and family home. The project, completed in 2025 after three years of planning and construction, was designed by architect Yoshiaki Nagasaka of Hitotomori Architects, a longtime friend of the brand’s founder.

The roughly 1,000-square-metre plot sits among tall red pines in a private enclave. Founder Manpei Tsurubayashi, who also serves as the brand’s designer and craftsman, decided on the location after a local real estate agent showed him the site in 2022. He envisioned using the natural slope for an outdoor concert stage.

The new facility replaces Listude’s previous home in Nara, where the brand operated from a converted sushi restaurant with a workshop on the ground floor and an event space upstairs. Listude was originally founded as Sonihouse in 2007 and rebranded in 2021.

A simple rectangular volume

Nagasaka organised the programme into a simple rectangular volume split across two levels. The front section houses the production workshop and offices on the ground floor. A spiral staircase leads up to the listening room, which features a large picture window overlooking the adjacent forest. The rear of the building contains the family’s private living quarters.

The entire back portion forms a double-height concert hall open to the forest on two sides. Six of Listude’s Scenery speakers hang from the ceiling. Tsurubayashi built custom sound panels using thick curtain fabric and wooden frames, a solution he devised after struggling to find panels in the exact sizes he needed.

Acoustic precision with separate circuits

Acoustic specialist Hiroshi Suzuki was brought in to reduce electromagnetic noise in both the concert hall and the listening room. Two separate electrical circuits were installed: one for machinery, office and living use, and another dedicated to the audio equipment in the listening and performance spaces.

Tsurubayashi said the decision to relocate from Nara to Yamanashi was driven by the community he had built with local musicians and artisans. He has been delivering speakers to musicians such as Yuni Mori and Gen Tanabe, as well as local cafes and wineries, including Beau Paysage winery run by Eishi Okamoto. “I really felt there was a good community of musicians, artists and people making great food and wine,” he said.

Concerts already tested

Listude has already held concerts inside the hall and on the outdoor stage. The sound quality, according to early reports, is crisp and clear, matching the forest setting.

The project represents a shift for Listude from a converted urban space to a purpose-built rural facility that integrates production, performance and living. For architecture and design readers, the project demonstrates how acoustic requirements, manufacturing workflow and domestic life can be housed within a single, simple architectural volume without compromising any of the functions.
