Periscope House in Poland Offers Lake Views Above Embankment Obstruction

MUS Architects has designed a distinctive residence named “The Periscope” near Lake Żywiec in Poland, where the primary architectural challenge was a lack of direct views towards the water due to an elevated earth embankment. The design ingeniously responds to this topographical condition by adopting a periscope-like form, elevating the main living areas above the obstructing embankment to secure unobstructed panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscape.

This innovative approach dictated a reversed vertical arrangement of the functional program. The ground floor houses the entrance, a two-car garage, and a spa zone with garden access. The first floor is dedicated to the private night zone, containing bedrooms and bathrooms. The uppermost level, the heart of the home, features the living room, dining area, and kitchen, all oriented towards the lake and boasting fully glazed facades. This continuous glazing erases the visual boundary between interior and exterior, allowing residents to immerse themselves in the scenic beauty of Lake Żywiec and the Beskid Żywiecki mountains.

Elevated Living and Functional Integration

The monolithic exterior geometry, clad in white aluminum, responds directly to the site’s topography.
