Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC have revealed the initial phase of a significant redevelopment project at Olympia, the historic exhibition complex in West London. This first stage of transformation includes the completion of a new public canopy, designed to improve accessibility and reconnect the 14-acre site with its surroundings. This intervention marks the beginning of a broader master plan set to be implemented through 2026 and 2027.

A Historic Landmark Reimagined

Originally opened in 1886, Olympia is a Victorian-era landmark that has served as a prominent exhibition venue. The current large-scale redevelopment aims to evolve the site into a mixed-use cultural destination. Key to this vision is re-establishing public access and integrating the complex more seamlessly into the urban fabric of West London.

Enhancing Public Access and Spaces

A central goal of the master plan is to address Olympia’s historical self-contained nature. While the exhibition halls continue their operations, the redevelopment unlocks previously restricted areas. This is achieved through a network of new streets, squares, terraces, and elevated walkways. The New Public Canopy

The inaugural architectural element to be completed is a striking new public canopy situated above the exhibition halls. Positioned at the second-floor level, this structure offers approximately 1,000 square meters of accessible public space and acts as a new primary entry point to the site. It extends over a public staircase and escalators, guiding visitors to elevated circulation routes and providing panoramic views of Olympia’s historic cast-iron and glass roof structures. This canopy is conceived as part of a strategy to introduce new layers of movement and human occupation while respecting and preserving the architectural character of the original complex.

Design Influences and Contemporary Addition

The design of the canopy is in dialogue with Olympia’s existing Victorian architecture, drawing inspiration from elements of the original complex designed by Sir Henry Edward Coe. The structure features five curved steel arches, each spanning 22 meters, and is clad in 520 pleated glass panels. Its form and detailing echo the architectural language of the historic Grand Hall, yet its contemporary construction marks it as a distinct and modern addition to the historic setting.

Future Additions to Olympia

The wider redevelopment plan for Olympia includes a diverse range of cultural, hospitality, workplace, and community-focused programs. Future additions are slated to include a 3,800-capacity live entertainment venue, a 1,575-seat theater, two hotels, various restaurants and cafés, approximately 550,000 square feet of office space, and dedicated rehearsal facilities for local organizations.
