British designer Faye Toogood has launched her new furniture collection, titled ‘Bone, Roll, Slump,’ which evokes a sense of archaeological discovery. The pieces are characterized by their weighty, sculptural forms and tactile finishes, appearing as if they have been unearthed rather than manufactured.

The collection is divided into three distinct chapters, each exploring different facets of this excavated aesthetic.

Bone Collection

The ‘Bone’ chapter focuses on a dining collection that takes inspiration from mudlarked bones and fossils. Central to this is the ‘Bone Table,’ a substantial superellipse dining table crafted from solid oak. Its asymmetrical design is available in configurations for eight or six people. The oak is oiled rather than lacquered, enhancing its natural texture and allowing it to age gracefully. The tabletop features four circular voids, reminiscent of traditional joinery plugs, which reveal the wood’s grain and connect the surface to its rounded legs. Both the table and chairs in this series share a swollen, sculptural profile, with leg designs referencing the knucklebones used in ancient games and divination. The ‘Bone Chairs’ stand on two solid legs, presenting a primal posture. Internally, the chairs feature a timber frame constructed with wool, coconut husk, and natural latex, upholstered as standard in bouclé, with other fabric options available. The ‘Bone’ family includes a dining chair, an armchair, and an oversized ‘Jumbo’ armchair.

Roll Collection

In contrast to the excavated feel of ‘Bone,’ the ‘Roll’ collection is more contained while maintaining a focus on weight, volume, and organic geometry. This series includes three-drawer consoles and single-drawer bedside tables shaped like rounded timber lozenges. These pieces rest on stout, trunk-like bases or can be wall-mounted. The wood grain follows the curvature of each item, and available finishes include golden oak, rich walnut, and ash stained in ‘Chalk,’ ‘Putty,’ or ‘Malachite.’

Soft Slump Collection

Concluding the collection is ‘Soft Slump,’ a series of asymmetrical lounge chairs that appear to gently collapse into themselves. This effect is achieved through an unconventional construction method where approximately four meters of fabric are gathered and cinched, similar to a drawstring on a duffel bag, creating deep folds. These chairs are presented on either hand-forged, dimpled steel legs or industrial castors. Toogood states that these are her most comfortable chairs to date.

Overall, ‘Bone, Roll, Slump’ is described as unique, intriguing, and pleasingly tactile, possessing a quality that feels both contemporary and elemental. The pieces from the collection are available for purchase directly from Faye Toogood’s website.
