A new multidisciplinary architecture practice, FUSION, has been established through the combination of four existing firms: ID Studio 4, Sperides Reiners Architects, ACi Architects, and Reztark Design Studio. This merger aims to create a practice with a broader national reach and a wider range of integrated services, including architecture, engineering, interiors, graphic design, and brand development.

Formation and Evolution

FUSION’s origins trace back to 2025 when ID Studio 4 and Sperides Reiners Architects merged to create FUSION AE, an integrated architecture and engineering firm with approximately 100 employees. The recent addition of ACi Architects and Reztark Design Studio has expanded the practice’s capabilities and led to the dropping of “AE” from its name, signifying a more holistic approach beyond just architecture and engineering.

The firms involved bring diverse specializations and geographical presences. ID Studio 4 was based in Dallas, while Sperides Reiners Architects operated from Minnesota. ACi Architects, located in Winter Park, Florida, focused on architecture, planning, and interior design. Reztark Design Studio, with offices in Ohio and Florida, offered architecture and planning alongside in-house branding and graphic design services.

Expanded Service Offerings

FUSION is positioning itself to serve multiple sectors, including restaurant, healthcare, housing, mixed-use, and retail. The integration of the four firms allows FUSION to offer a comprehensive service model where disciplines such as architecture, engineering, interiors, graphic design, and brand development are managed cohesively. This is based on the principle that integrated design perspectives lead to better project outcomes, as clients often experience these elements as a unified environment rather than separate components.

National Footprint and Studio Culture

With the merger, FUSION will maintain offices in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Minneapolis, and across Florida in Orlando and Tampa. Each of the four legacy firms will reportedly retain its team, project leads, and studio culture, preserving the distinct identities and expertise that contributed to the merger. The leadership structure has been updated, with Eric Reiners serving as president, Brett Kratzer as Chief Strategy Officer, and Brian Chandler as Chief Operating Officer.

Industry Trends and Market Response

The formation of FUSION reflects a notable trend in the architecture and design industry where larger firms are acquiring specialized practices to broaden their service offerings and market reach. Recent examples include Populous merging with Fentress and acquiring OJB, and CannonDesign acquiring Ennead and Cityfi.

This consolidation trend is partly driven by the economic challenges faced by smaller and midsize firms. Data from the AIA indicates a significant decline in billings for firms with fewer than 10 employees and those with under 50 employees between 2015 and 2023. Conversely, larger firms (over 50 employees) experienced growth. FUSION’s merger aims to address this by creating a larger entity with the shared infrastructure and depth of services that individual smaller practices may struggle to fund independently, thereby enhancing their ability to compete and serve clients seeking continuity and comprehensive solutions.

For professionals and firms, it underscores the evolving landscape of practice management and the increasing importance of scale and multidisciplinary collaboration in a competitive environment.
